The Val di Merse region of the Siena province is known for its unspoilt countryside, and Chiusdino is an excellent example of this. When the sun shines, there's nothing better than to head out into the green hills and enjoy a spot of exploring – whether on foot, bicycle or horseback. As with many villages in the region, Chiusdino sits atop a hill, and is around 550 metres above sea level, offering some challenging hiking opportunities.
The village centre consists of narrow winding streets, steep roads and grey stone houses. Some of the more interesting sites in Chiusdino include the Chapel of the Compagnia and the Romanesque parish church. The village is a great place to relax with a coffee or a glass of wine, especially during the summer months when the temperatures are at their hottest.
With San Galgano being just 6km away, views over the famous roofless San Galgano Abbey can be enjoyed on a clear day. Chiusdino was the actually the birthplace of the 12th century knight, and his boyhood house can be viewed in the village centre.



The UNESCO World Heritage Site that is the city of Siena is more than worthy of a day trip when staying in Chiusdino, and can be reached in around 45 minutes. Another popular option is to hire a car and head out into the neighbouring towns and villages of this picturesque region, such as Sovicille and Monticiano. The rural nature of Tuscany means that the use of a car is a near-necessity when staying in Chiusdino.
